EU Engages OpenAI and Anthropic in Separate AI Safety Discussions
Brussels has initiated distinct dialogues with OpenAI and Anthropic regarding AI safety protocols. OpenAI has proactively granted the European Commission access to its latest model, a move characterized as cooperative by Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier. Anthropic, while engaged in multiple technical discussions, has not yet broached the subject of model access.
The timing coincides with global governments increasing scrutiny of frontier AI systems. The EU's phased implementation of its AI Act establishes risk-based frameworks for AI deployment, though pre-market model submission remains voluntary. Both OpenAI and Anthropic represent the vanguard of U.S.-based advanced AI development, with their rapidly evolving capabilities prompting regulatory urgency.
Notably, the Commission categorized these discussions under cybersecurity priorities during its May 11 briefing. This positioning underscores the growing convergence between AI governance and digital security frameworks in policymaking circles.
